This book provides good information layed out in an easy to read format on the cultivation, consumption, legality, and history of peyote and other similar cacti. It also gives a breakdown of the alkaloids in peyote and gives detailed methods for mescaline extraction (you know...for resaerch purposes). It also includes pictures and descriptions of other cacti containing alkaloids similar to peyote. The only shortcoming I find in this book is the lack of any research reports on the harmful effects of peyote, but that could be because there has been very little research done on it. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in peyote for any purpose.

BEAUTIFUL PROJECTS!!
I have several beading books and really shouldn't be buying any more, but I'm glad I bought this one. There are 27 projects in this book and I actually like MOST of them! Usually, with beading books I'm lucky if there's more than a couple of things from the book that I actually want to make. The designs in this book are really beautiful! The instructions are clear and the great photos and illustrations make them easy to follow. This book is great for beginners and experienced beaders. Highly recommended!

Mystified
Even though I agree that the patterns in this book were inviting, I found the directions rather intimidating for a beginner. For example, on page 15 of the "Electrifying Zigzag Strip bracelet, the instructions state to pick up 12 color B and 2 color C beads. Yet when I look at Figure 1 on page 16, I can only count 11 color C beads. Possibly I am misreading the instructions inasmuch as I am a beginner.The "Bead around the Bend" necklace on page 35 was quite different. Interesting structure to bead around once one learns the basic peyote stitch. All kinds of experimentation can take place to give this piece your very own signature.In essence, I guess I need someone to hold my hand as I peruse each design. Maybe once I get a handle on the techniques I will be more inclined to encourage others to purchase this book.

Gorgeous designs, Probably not a great book for a brand new beader
My knowledge about peyote stitch can fit into a single, very short sentence. After flipping through the book Stitch Workshop: Peyote Stitch basic techniques, advanced results from the publisher of Bead and Button Magazine; I am a little more knowledgeable, but no less wow'd by those who can do it.My personal favorite part of the entire book (this is coming from a non beadweaver) is that it has a brief history of peyote and the origin of the name "peyote". I didn't know the name for this stitch was used by the Native Americans when the stitch was used to depict symbols on religious artifacts. However, when the stitch was used on non religious items, it was referred to as "gourd stitch". Over the years, all variations of this particular stitch are called peyote.In addition to the history of the term peyote stitch, the first section of the book includes a very detailed techniques section including: Flat Even and Odd Count, Circular, Tubular, Decrease, Increase,...

Rachel's Bead Riffs presents 23 beautiful projects combining Right Angle Weave and Peyote stitching in well thought out designs. There are many exquisite projects to choose from and Rachel gives us three examples of color use for each of the projects. Rondo is a stunning choker, and Night in Tunisia is a personal favorite.The Nightingale earrings made of 2mm Swarovski Elements are and excellent use of sparkle and the Dolled Up Bracelet uses Rose Montees cleverly sewn at the ends of peyote tubes. In Billie's Bounce Rachel uses the thread as part of the design element for an interesting effect. Cocktails for Two is an other personal favorite. Rachel Nelson-Smith's Bead Riffs has something for everyone. A Jazz theme runs through the book inviting you to sit and absorb it for a while. I have browsed through it a few times now and every time I find something else I want to try. Bead sellers should see a spike in sales after people purchase this book.Rachel has a sense of color that is matched by very few. She has included five color ways to help beaders in their color choices for their own projects. What a nice touch. They are named Nature Girl, High Times, Stagelight (a favorite), Softly (another favorite) and Blue in Green. The instructions are well written and illustrated. Most of the beads she uses are easily obtained and may already be in the beader's stash.Projects run from the simple to the extravagant. Jazz and beads combine to make some wonderful pieces
Rachel Nelson-Smith has been beading for a very long time, she also sings jazz. This book is jewelry inspired by her love for jazz music.After you read the introduction, there is a 20 page set up section which explains the tools and supplies as well as being a primer in the techniques used in the jewelry. One of my favorite parts of the set up is a photo of the color palettes she works in. The instructions are clear with diagrams as well as photos that use contrasting color beads to show how things are joined together.Most of the jewelry in the book is built from a single needle right angle weave base. It creates the frame work for embellishment which is done in netting and peyote.The projects are separated by type rather than by technique. So the first project chapter is Necklaces.
